Join us at the Mary and Joseph Center in beautiful Palos Verdes, Los Angeles, CA, this fall for an in-depth, experiential study of prānāyāma grounded in Yogic and Indian texts. Classical prānāyāma has been developed over millennia - passed down from teacher to student. Our training welcomes you into this knowledge-sharing stream about one of Yoga's most powerful tools.
Mastering Prānāyāma is rooted in the concept of viniyoga - yoga that is adapted and appropriate for the individual. The training meets you where you are as a way of inviting you to go deeper - enriching, expanding and clarifying your knowledge about one of the most important parts of a Yoga practice.
It can be challenging to get reliable information and training in prānāyāma - so often it is misunderstood or not taught at all, especially in North America. Mastering Prānāyāma is your opportunity to receive reliable information, based in the traditional texts, led by experienced faculty. Return home with a solid understanding of each of these powerful tools and how they affect your system.
Mastering Prānāyāma assumes that students have a solid foundation of knowledge about Yoga. Module 2 is geared to certified Yoga Therapists.
You should have a daily Yoga practice and a Yoga mentor. Don’t worry if you do not have a mentor - we will connect you with one. We believe it is important to have the outside guidance of a knowledgeable mentor as part of this training. Prānāyāma is perhaps the most powerful tool of Yoga and you can expect that new insights will arise from this training. We want to be sure that you have support before and after you begin the training.
Applications* are considered on a case-by-case basis - personal study and practice are recognized as valid ways of training in Yoga.
We look forward to meeting you and working with you on this exciting path of prānāyāma and Yoga!
* To help us get to know you better, we have created a short application form for anyone wishing to attend. We want to ensure that you receive the most benefit from the training and you are well prepared about what to expect.
Mastering Prānāyāma is grounded in your personal experience and the classical texts based in the Yoga Darśana and the Vedas. While we consider the experiential aspects of the training to be the most important, we recognise that textual knowledge grounds and helps to frame our experience. This training a blend of both. There will be time to reflect on these experiences - both individually and as a group.
In Module 1, you can expect to:
Each day will open and close with a practice led by one of the faculty. Most practices will include āsana, prānāyāma, visualization and chanting.
There will be opportunities for further reflection and practice once the group training day ends.
Module 2 is geared toward Yoga Therapists seeking a greater understanding of how prānāyāma can be used in a therapeutic setting. This is a unique opportunity to work with your colleagues and the MP faculty to do an in-depth analysis of real-life case studies. Before the in-person module begins, all participants will have access to a live, half-day virtual review session so that we can arrive at the Module ready to dig into this fascinating subject.
In Module 2, you can expect to:
NOTE: This training satisfies IAYT's continuing education requirement for recertification.
We encourage you to enter this training as you would an intensive retreat. You will be immersed in the content and held within a container that allows and encourages you to step away from your usual way of being in the world. We hope you will fully commit to experiencing the power of prānāyāma.
You can expect a typical training day to follow this schedule:
There also may be assignments to be completed after the training day for the next day.
Where and when is this training?
Mastering Prānāyāma is offered over two modules.
Module 1 will be held at the Mary and Joseph Center, a beautiful retreat center in the Palos Verdes neighborhood of Los Angeles. The dates for Module 1 are September 29 - October 4, 2024.
Module 2 dates are TBD. Module 2 will be offered online via Zoom. It will be recorded and you will have unlimited access to the recordings.
What is the difference between Module 1 and Module 2?
Module 1 provides a solid foundation in the how, what, why of classical prānāyāma. Module 2 takes this information and applies it in a therapeutic way to a variety of situations and individuals.
Why isn't Module One online?
Prānāyāma is subtle - that is part of its power. We believe that sharing information about prānāyāma and doing it needs to happen in person, with guidance and support. We are deliberately keeping the cohort size small - limited to 30 max - so each person will receive personalized attention. The training is a great opportunity to cultivate a sangha or a community of like-minded people. Join us!
Why do I have to apply?
We want you to get the most out of the training. It helps us to know if you have had any prior experience with prānāyāma and better understand your relationship with Yoga - Yoga philosophy, other trainings, etc. It also gives us a chance to pair people with a mentor, if needed. This training is intense by nature of its topic. We want to be sure that you are well-prepared.
I don't have formal Yoga teacher training, can I still participate?
Yes! We are speaking to each applicant individually - you may have enough personal practice and study to participate. Please contact us directly for a more personalized answer (fill out the contact form on the home page).
How much is the training?
The cost of Module One is $1900. Receive a 20% discount when you enroll before June 1st. We also have referral discounts. Check out our Tuition Page for more details.
NOTE: Payment for lodging is separate. The Mary and Joseph Center has both single and double room options, ranging from $100 to $180/night. Please contact them directly to book. Our contact there is Sydne Yanko-Jongbloed (310) 377-4867 at ext. 258. Breakfast and lunch are included in your tuition.
You will receive more information about that when you apply. People local to Los Angeles are welcome to attend daily and go home in the evening.
Can I attend just one of the modules?
Yes! You can attend Module 1 and stop there. Module 1 is a prerequisite for Module 2, however.
Will I receive any CEC's?
Yes! Please let us know in advance if you wish to receive CECs from either Yoga Alliance and/or IAYT.
